Wade Through Waterfalls
Street vendors sell everything from fresh fruits and barbecued meats to medicinal herbs and elixirs. Think sweet plantains, mangos, yams, kushkush (cornmeal), fresh fish and locally caught game, all cooked with plenty of Creole spices and savory herbs for a kick. Mero, a volcanic gray-black sand beach, is named after the town of Mero, but it actually lies in the neighboring town of St. Joseph. Cruise lines and shore excursion operators offer few trips exclusively to beaches. Dominica is better known for its ecotourism attractions including waterfall hikes. The best Dominica beaches near the cruise port require some form of transportation to reach them. The beach itself is very rocky, with patches of black sand, but it’s the snorkelling opportunities that people come here for, not the sunbathing.

The Boiling Lake is Dominica’s most incredible natural attraction, but also it is most dangerous. Found within the Trois Pitons National Park This huge freshwater lake is heated from below by the boiling gases produced by the violent volcanic activity below the surface of the island. Just south of Roseau, can be found the strange yet beautiful spectacle of Champagne Beach.

It's located in town, just steps away from shops, restaurants and transportation. The Port of Woodbridge Bay, less frequently used, is about a mile north of the city. My absolute number one favourite excursion from Dominica cruise port, was to Titou Gorge. (Such a true favourite that I visited more than once.) The incredible gorge is high up in the mountains, and involves a steep drive uphill, and then a freezing cold swim to a waterfall at the end of the gorge. This breathtaking location was used as a filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean, so you can also live all your Jack Sparrow dreams here. Morne Bruce is a big old hill overlooking Roseau, and if you haven’t got time to get out of the city, a hike up here makes a great thing to do while docked in Dominica cruise port.

Fed by clear mountain waters from a 40 foot waterfall, these waters appear emerald green because of the leafy, filtered sunlight. Located in Morne Trois Piton National Park, the pool is a favorite for swimmers and is the 2nd most visited tourist spot on the island. This is another experience that I was desperate to book in Dominica, but either never had the time to do, or it was booked up when I was free. But it was so well-recommended to me that I’d book it up in an instant when I return. For something a bit more chilled, because I fully appreciate that hurling yourself down rapids and into ravines might not be everybody’s cup of tea, make sure you spend time at one of the island’s hot springs. Dominica is a hotbed of geothermal activity- it’s all those volcanos, in the style of a tropical Iceland– so the island is teeming with hot springs and mud baths.

The island features no chain hotels or big-box mega-stores, though there are a Pizza Hut and KFC in Roseau, the capital city. But my favourite place for eating and drinking near Dominica cruise port is undoubtedly the Fort Young Hotel. Roseau is very easy to explore on foot, and my personal opinion is that you’d be missing out if you didn’t spend an hour or so exploring the colourful architecture of this pretty city’s streets. The dry season and particularly the period over Christmas and New Year, are the most popular and busiest times to visit, as the weather is great and many travelers from the north are looking for winter sun. The eastern side of the island faces out over the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea while the western side faces out onto the stormier waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

The lake is spectacular, but the hike there is an arduous 8-hour return slog, so it’s only for the fit and healthy. It’s well worth the effort to witness the continually boiling waters of this spectacle.
